National Women’s Month

History

National Women’s Month is celebrated in many countries to recognize the achievements and contributions of women in various fields. The origins of Women’s Month trace back to International Women’s Day (March 8), which was first observed in 1911 as a movement advocating for women’s rights, particularly in labor, voting, and social equality. Over time, this single day expanded into a month-long celebration in several countries, including the United States (since 1987) and the Philippines (since 1988).

In the Philippines, National Women’s Month is celebrated every March as part of Republic Act 6949, which officially declared March 8 as National Women’s Day. The month-long observance is spearheaded by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), aligning with the global theme of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Mission and Significance

The main objectives of National Women’s Month include:

  1. Advocating for Gender Equality – Raising awareness about the challenges women face and promoting policies that support women’s rights.
  2. Recognizing Women’s Achievements – Honoring the contributions of women in various fields such as politics, science, business, education, and community development.
  3. Empowering Women and Girls – Encouraging women to take leadership roles and providing opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  4. Strengthening Laws and Policies – Pushing for stronger implementation of gender-responsive laws like the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710) in the Philippines.
  5. Promoting Safe and Inclusive Spaces – Addressing issues such as violence against women, workplace discrimination, and economic inequality.

Each year, the celebration follows a specific theme, with activities such as forums, seminars, exhibits, and community programs designed to highlight women’s issues and achievements.
